Photocommunication 1
VC 605 / Credits 6 / Every Wednesday (9:30AM to 11AM) from August through November.
Beginning with the understanding of the fundamental principles of photography, the course goes on
to explore creative and critical aspects of the photo-making process. It concludes with an introduction
to studio photography.

Course Contents
Techniques of photography: Using the film camera and dark room. Using digital cameras.
Editorial Photography. Photo Communication. Photo Essays. Product Photography using Available Light. Studio Photography. Large Format Cameras. Historical development of the photographic image. Critical perspectives in photography.

Course Objectives
Skills in developing, printing and presentation.
Understanding light, composition.
Photo Documentation, Editorial Photography.
Creative communication through photography.
Skills in lighting and photographing a product.
Development of a critical perspective.

Course Structure
The course is conducted on every Tuesday from August through November. A morning lecture is followed by an assignment related to the talk. Students are expected to complete the assignment during the week and present their work in the following class, after the lecture.
The course includes two visits to a photography gallery and an invited talk by a guest speaker. Students are encouraged to develop a critical approach to photography and use the photographic image to articulate personal viewpoints.

Course Evaluation
The course is evaluated on the basis of assignments that need to be submitted in the format, and by the date specified on the assignment sheet. Students need to make a presentation of their seminar in mid-November.

Darkroom Permissions, Equipment, Materials
Please contact the IDC office for permissions for using the darkroom. A limited number of cameras, raw film, printing papers, chemicals, and lenses can be issued for a limited duration.

Photocommunication 2 and Introduction to Video

The second course encourages the development of personal approaches to photography.
An emphasis on critical studies and the ability to formulate directions for exploration
the elective offers a creative space to those who are keen to develop narrative abilities
in photo and video communication.

A study of ways of seeing.
Studies in the construction of narratives.

Photocommunication 2
Creative Photo-Imagery. Photo Montage. Digital Compositing.
Introduction to Video
Basics of videography. Introduction to camera, sound and editing.

Equipment, Materials
Digital cameras / Handycams / Mini-DV cameras are issued for a limited duration.
